abkhazia

twenty-five years after the war with georgia, traces of the bloody conflict are still tangible everywhere in abkhazia. all the way down to the center of capital sukhum the republic lies littered with carcasses of buildings that are slowly being claimed by mother nature.

the subtropical republic lies enclosed between the black sea and the mountains of the caucasus. although rich in mandarins, abkhazia is relatively poor and scents of a mixture of eucalyptus and melancholy. cows freely roam the country’s solely highway; the one where soviet-make cars still dominate the street scene. somehow time seems to have forgotten about abkhazia…
